Two numbers and a name got me to thinking.
6,278. 2,560. Kyrsten Sinema. Three clues to how politically entrepreneurial Americans could conceivably break the stranglehold the country’s two major parties have on our democracy.
There were 6,278 state legislative seats up for election across the nation this past November. Those who won 2,560 of those seats ran without major party opposition. There’s are reasons for this that run deeper than partisan gerrymandering. We’ve reached the point where it’s next to impossible for Democrats to win in rural areas and for Republicans to win in cities. That’s because each political tribe is convinced the other is going to destroy the country.
Neither side’s faithful are exactly head over heels in love with their own party. The GOP has strayed so far from its roots that many longtime Republicans now have a hard time recognizing the party much less feeling a sense of belonging.
