Symbolism Run Amok

For the life of me, can’t quite figure out why gimmicks are so appealing to so many. Even if gimmickry is not immediately apparent, it’s nearly inevitable that it’ll be seen for what it is eventually.

A point of clarity: I’m talking gimmicks here, not con jobs. Our country has had a president who was and still is a living, breathing, walking, talking con job and who desperately wants back in the Oval Office. That’s a whole ‘nother matter. I’m talking gimmicks here. Like when Wisconsin’s governor made a big splash more than a year ago with what was widely regarded as a clever budgetary maneuver that put his ability to outwit his opponents on display.

Now his ploy is back in the news, with the state Supreme Court taking up a case challenging the constitutionality of something that never was anything more than a gimmick. With both liberals and conservatives on the court appearing troubled by the governor’s actions, these judges may very well decide to rein in his powers. A thoroughly empty…
