Stupid is not the same as close-minded. Dumb’s not the absence of character, it’s a lack of intelligence.
I’m prompted to point this out after former Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney recently said the problem with today’s politics is “we’re electing idiots” who are not “serious people.” I beg to differ. Those she speaks of are plenty clever. They are well spoken, adept at turning a phrase. And they are deadly serious about imposing their ideology on our country, seriously allergic to truth telling, their minds closed to any notion that does not align with their dogma and advance their aspirations.
Though I disagree with Liz Cheney about very nearly everything, she’s undeniably serious and unquestionably smart. I sympathize with her. She’s been drummed out of her own party, her career interrupted if not ended, for standing on principle.
There’s a problem with today’s politics alright. An abundance of them. So much deceit and conceit. So little integrity. Greed is glorified, need ignored. …
