Ordinarily, most of us, most of the time, make it through a day with hardly anyone caring about what we think or what’s going on in our lives. Oh, we’ll get the occasional inquiry. So, what you been up to? How’re you doing? Judging from the paucity of follow-up questions, those asking are usually just being polite.
Perfect. I'd love to see the look of confusion on the reporter's face with that. A thoughtful answer to a superficial question can also be revealing of character...of both the person answering the question and the person who asked it. Ideally, it can be an invitation to explore something different and deeper.
Your discussion of the demands and pitfalls of public life was right on. I hadn't been more than a local university doc who got quoted frequently during the AIDS epidemic, but I gained appreciation for the potential disconnect between reporter's interpretations of my comments, then filtered through the editor (after the reporter's pitch to the editor) and finally onto print or edited video...to hopefully come out like what I had meant in the first place. Selling a story tends to distort the story for drama's sake...something I keep in mind as I now read or see news coverage.
